Nestled in the heart of North Otago, the Waitaki District is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, little blue penguins, beautiful limestone Victorian buildings and the Moeraki Boulders. Tourism Waitaki, a Council Controlled Organisation of the Waitaki District Council, has responsibility for fostering a positive, diverse, sustainable and growing tourism sector within the Waitaki District, through tourism destination promotion and attraction development. The District has recently experienced unprecedented tourism growth and the Board’s strategy is to build on this success.
Reporting to the Board and leading a team of 5 direct reports with a wider team of 30, the General Manager will be responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership to Tourism Waitaki. This diverse role includes managing the daily operations of Tourism Waitaki and its business units, including the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail and the 2 i-Sites. Growing revenues of existing business units and identifying new opportunities for growth are key components of the role, along with building enduring and effective relationships with a vast array of stakeholders and partners.
We seek financially astute, tertiary educated candidates with senior management experience, ideally gained from within the tourism and/or economic development sector. Well-developed leadership, relationship building and communication skills are essential, coupled with energy and drive and the ability to balance competing demands across the organisation. The successful candidate will possess a growth focus and the capability to manage change within an evolving and developing business.
