Chief Executive - Whakatāne District Council

Reference Number: 711330aa

Location: Bay of Plenty

  • HIGH PERFORMING COUNCIL SEEKS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE
  • DRIVE ORGANISATIONAL EXCELLENCE, AND SUSTAINABLE AND ENGAGED COMMUNITIES

The Whakatāne District, situated in the centre of the Eastern Bay of Plenty, is not only the gateway to White Island but is the economic hub of the East. 54 kilometres of pristine beach (including Ōhope Beach, voted New Zealand’s most loved beach in 2014) is gateway to Te Urewera and Whirinaki Forest in the South. The district is rich in primary industries, tourism and Māori culture. The Council’s vision of being the place of choice for people to live, work and play is one of the factors in its growth.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in the ongoing development of an organisation held in high regard by residents, visitors, government and business. The Chief Executive provides strategic leadership and efficient management of all aspects of Council’s activities. The role fosters an organisation culture that delivers high performance and delivers results for customers; and ensures close and productive relationships with a range of regional stakeholders, in particular mana whenua. The development of strategies that realise the Council’s Long-term Plan, economic growth initiatives and support robust financial management practices are key to the position.

Preferred candidates will have open, engaging and collaborative leadership qualities, well-developed political and intellectual acuity, exceptional commercial acumen and a track record of delivering outstanding results. The ability to work with and respect the governance role of elected members and a work history of strong coaching and team development skills will be important competencies in preferred candidates.

Matatika/Trust, Akoranga/Learning and Hiranga/Excellence are the values that underpin Council’s work. These are also vital qualities in any candidate’s profile.
