Reference Number: 738668aa
Location: Tauranga, Bay of Plenty
Tauranga is New Zealand’s fifth largest city and widely known as the fastest growing region in New Zealand. It has a population that has almost doubled in the last 20 years and is anticipated to reach 141,000 by 2021. Responsible for managing this vibrant, innovative and prosperous city, Tauranga City Council is committed to developing a city that balances economic, social, cultural and environmental well being.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in continuing to develop an impressive organisation. The Council seeks a Chief Executive who will provide strategic leadership and efficient management of all aspects of Council’s activities, deftly balancing efficiency and value for money with aspirational service goals for the people of Tauranga. These include the enhancement of organisational capability and accountability; and development of close relationships with community and regional stakeholders, mana whenua, business and central government. The development of strategies that realise economic growth, foster a customer-focused organisation and ensure robust financial management practices are also crucial in the position.
Preferred candidates should be progressive, energetic and highly influential in style. They will have open, engaging and collaborative leadership qualities, well developed political and intellectual acuity, exceptional commercial acumen and a track record of delivering outstanding results. The ability to work with and respect the governance role of elected members, along with knowledge of issues related to the pressures of growth, but not necessarily just city growth, will be crucial. In addition, experience in the development of public infrastructure and the promotion of community engagement will also be important for success.
