High potential leadership development

The need

The CEO and executive team of this large local government organisation identified the need to enhance leadership development activity by formally identifying and accelerating the development of their high-potential future leaders.

The goal was to ensure a robust process to identify and develop highly performing operational leaders to ensure readiness for promotion to strategic leader positions as needs arose.

The project required the design of the processes for:

  • Nomination
  • Selection
  • Assessment
  • Development planning
  • Internal communication and support

The solution

  • Phase 1 – Develop success profile for selection and evaluation of high potential leaders
  • Phase 2 – Design and develop nomination and selection processes, assessment (development) centre, and briefing information for potential participants, their managers and future sponsors
  • Phase 3 – Implement selection processes and run development centre
  • Phase 4 – Implement development planning process

The results

The first intake of high potential leaders into the accelerated development programme proved very successful, with 90% of those chosen showing significant development and achieving career progression in the first 12 months.
