Incorporated in 2010, SmartCo is a joint venture company providing high quality smart meter services to the energy sector. Currently serving more than 250,000 urban and rural consumers across NZ, SmartCo is owned by several electricity lines companies including Alpine Energy, Counties Power, Electricity Invercargill, Network Tasman, On Metering, The Power Company and WEL Networks. With a number of energy retailers already secured as customers, SmartCo continues to attract additional retailers whilst it completes the final stages of its meter deployment and looks to embark on the next phase in its evolution – pursuing the wider provision and utilisation of beneficial strategic data, analytics and tools.

Currently the SmartCo Board is comprised of 5 of the leaders of the Joint Venture companies. A new CEO has just been appointed and the Board believes that this is an opportune time in the company’s development to benefit from the additional appointment of an Independent Chair. Working closely with the Board to enhance the organisations impartial governance and continually evolve its future strategic direction, the Independent Chair will also provide close support and guidance to the new Christchurch based CEO and hence will preferably be situated in the same location.

Applicants will ideally possess knowledge and experience of working within the energy/electricity, telco or technology sector and any prior experience of working with “start-up” stage organisations would also be beneficial. Applicants will also bring to the role a successful track record of governance experience and be able to demonstrate their contribution to the successful growth of an evolving business. Proven strategic thinking ability and sound commercial acumen are therefore essential. Prior experience of working in the capacity of a Board Chair is also highly desirable.
