About the role

The GM Assurance, Finance and Risk is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team leading delivery across all aspects of finance, legal, risk, procurement and regulatory activities.  This is both a strategic and hands-on role at times and key responsibilities include the:

  • While conscious of the current challenges to the Community and the tourist economy, the Council remains committed to delivering on key projects for the future.
  • Provision of strategic and operational financial planning and reporting across all aspects of operations, and acting as Chief Financial Officer;
  • Leadership of the Council’s long-term plan and annual plan, with on-going monitoring and reporting to management, CE and Council;
  • Delivery of effective regulatory services to residents and businesses in the district;
  • Overseeing of legal services across the council;
  • Development of a risk and compliance culture, embedding strong levels of assurance across all statutory, regulatory, legal and policy compliance requirements.

Leading a high performing team of 4 direct reports and over 60 team members, this is a high energy environment focussed on ensuring activities are service-centric, customer-focused, efficiently run, and represent value for money for ratepayers, meeting the needs of the community.

About the person                       

You will be a Chartered Accountant holding a senior role, with substantial experience leading teams in a large, complex organisation, requiring strategic impact, financial acumen and management of multiple stakeholder pressures, ideally in a local or central government environment. You will:

  • Preferably have proven experience as a Chief Financial Officer;
  • Have a strong track record managing stakeholder relationships successfully;
  • Have high credibility and experience as a trusted advisor working with Councillors;
  • Have demonstrated strong political awareness, business acumen and strategic agility;
  • Be degree qualified, with MBA or Post Graduate Executive Development desirable;
  • Be known as an excellent leader who relates well to all kinds of people, builds rapport quickly, is easy to approach.
