Chief Executive Officer - Environment Canterbury

Reference Number: 578145aa

Location: Christchurch

  • Christchurch Based
  • Strategic Leadership Role
  • Work in Partnership with the Community

Environment Canterbury is changing the way regional governance is managed in one of New Zealand's largest, most diverse and naturally stunning regions, using a customer-centred approach toward facilitating sustainable development. The organisation is broad and complex, and maintains significantly strong relationships with key stakeholders, Territorial Authorities, Ngai Tahu and the wider public, to progress a wide range of programmes across many disciplines and to enable continuous information sharing and collaboration.

You will lead a highly skilled executive team with a fresh approach, committed to managing the region’s resources for future generations by balancing sustainable economic development, conservation and recreational use. With a total team of over 600, the CEO reports to a Council with a mix of appointed and elected members.   Key issues and areas of focus will include balancing sustainable development with the protection and enhancement of the environment. The Council has prioritised a focus on water through the Canterbury Water Management Strategy and biodiversity and biosecurity. Other key areas are building stakeholder relationships, sustaining a service and delivery based culture within the organisation and supporting the transition to a fully elected Council.

Candidates will be able to demonstrate a proven track record of success as a CEO or in a senior leadership role, likely but not necessarily from within local/regional government or the wider public sector.  The ability to deliver sustainable results in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities is essential.  Strong commercial and strategic capability with an authentic and engaging leadership style to inspire the organisation is also sought, as is the ability to build and enhance relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

This represents a significant leadership opportunity in shaping the region for years to come.
