Director of Boarding - Otago Boys' High School

Reference Number: 7365aa

Location: Dunedin

  • Developing Great Men
  • Proud Heritage and Strong Traditions
  • Unique leadership role based in Dunedin

Otago Boys’ High School, founded in 1863 is one of NZ’s oldest boys’ secondary schools.  With a proud heritage and strong traditions, balanced with modern learning opportunities, it offers a first-class education for boarders and day boys and takes its role in developing “great men” seriously.  Sited on the hills overlooking Dunedin, its ethos of ‘Best for Boys Through the Right Learning’ underpins all that they do.  With a positive and engaging school culture, they celebrate tall poppies and push the middle boy.  They are large enough to offer a wide and deep curriculum and small enough to know every boy.

“School House”, the boarding hostel, offers boys from NZ and overseas the opportunity to live and learn together in a safe, structured ‘home away from home’ environment and to thrive in the Hostel brotherhood.

As Director of Boarding you will be a key member of the leadership team, playing a wider role in student activities, engaging in the full life of the school and contributing to its ongoing success.

You will be responsible for the professional leadership of School House and tasked with providing a happy, caring, safe and inclusive environment for students where welfare is the paramount concern.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Passion for leading, relating well to, inspiring, guiding and managing teenage boys.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, relationship and communication skills.
  • Proven people management.
  • Skills in developing an easy rapport with parents and their sons.
  • Enthusiasm, keen to enjoy a laugh and the camaraderie; the brotherhood that the boarding house engenders.
  • Experience making sound and effective decisions, displaying fairness, consistency, respect, and positive reinforcement of expected behaviours.

This is a unique leadership opportunity to join a highly regarded secondary school.  Accommodation is included, with a modern 3-bedroom house provided.
