  • Lead Alpine Energy through a defining period of investment and change
  • Work alongside shareholders, fellow EDBs and regulators on its future
  • Timaru based - Coastline, rivers and the Southern Alps all within reach

About the Company:

Alpine Energy owns and operates the electricity distribution network that connects over 34,000 customers throughout South Canterbury, covering the Timaru, Waimate and Mackenzie districts. Alpine is proud to be 100% community owned.  Shareholders are Timaru District Holdings Ltd, LineTrust South Canterbury, Waimate District Council and Mackenzie District Council with all profits returned to the region through dividends and local sponsorship.

As an essential lifeline service, Alpine plays a significant role in the community, contributing to the growth and prosperity of South Canterbury and New Zealand's transition to a low-carbon economy. Alpine is entering a period of disciplined long term capital investment, bringing genuine opportunity for the right leader to lead a quality core service and shape what comes next, alongside a high-performing team.

About The Role:

This is an opportunity to lead Alpine Energy through a defining period for the business. As CEO, you'll work with the Board to translate strategy and purpose into a clear, deliverable and efficient plan - sharpening the organisation's focus on reliable, cost-effective network performance while preparing Alpine for the investment ahead. You'll lead the Executive Leadership Team, strengthen engagement across the business, and build strong working relationships with shareholders, employees, regulators and the wider South Canterbury community.

An outward-looking approach matters here: Alpine is committed to collaborating with fellow electricity distribution businesses and industry partners, sharing learning and working together on the challenges facing the sector. Reporting to the Board, you'll be a visible, credible leader and as comfortable in the field as you are in the boardroom or in front of shareholders, regulators, the Electricity Authority and Commerce Commission.

Skills & Experience:

We're looking for a pragmatic, commercially astute leader who brings:

  • Significant senior or executive experience (10+ years), ideally within a regulated industry, infrastructure or the energy sector
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen, with the ability to apply key financial indicators to sound decision-making
  • Proven experience leading teams and engaging effectively with a Board
  • Significant experience working with New Zealand government and regulatory bodies
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to speak out
  • A genuine, demonstrated commitment to employee safety and wellbeing
  • Superior relationship-building skills across all levels, internally and externally
  • A continuous improvement mindset, with a focus on excellent customer service, efficiency and cost management
  • The poise to manage multiple priorities and stay steady under pressure
  • Director-level governance experience is an advantage.

Previous CEO experience and a tertiary qualification are desirable but not essential.

Culture:

At Alpine Energy, people sit at the centre of everything the business does. Its Culture Commitment guides how the team works together so every person feels safe, optimistic, energised, involved and appreciated. Employees empower each other with trust and respect, take ownership of their words and actions, and act with integrity. As CEO, you'll set the tone for keeping the team connected as one, and for creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.
