Central Lakes Trust (CLT) is seeking to appoint an experienced director to the Board of Pioneer Energy Limited (Pioneer).

Wholly owned by CLT, Pioneer is an active investor in renewable and sustainable energy developments across New Zealand through its subsidiary, Pioneer Energy Group Limited Partnership (PEGLP). Its portfolio includes generation, retail, and energy-related services, delivering strong returns to CLT — including $9.23 million in dividends in the 2024/25 year.

Directors of Pioneer govern a group of entities that include Pioneer Energy Ltd, PEGLP and Pioneer Energy Renewables Limited Partnership (PERLP) and its subsidiary businesses. Collectively, the boards are responsible for setting strategy, ensuring principled decision-making, managing assets prudently and overseeing financial performance and risk. Directors play a key role in protecting each organisation’s reputation, while driving long-term sustainability and supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.

This opportunity is the result of planned director rotation, and the incumbent director is likely to re-stand.

Directors typically attend 8–10 board meetings per year, some held virtually and others in Queenstown Lakes or other regional centres. The role is remunerated.

The Ideal Person

We are seeking an experienced governance leader, ideally with prior experience as a Board Chair, who brings proven business acumen, commercial insight, and entrepreneurial skill.

They will offer deep knowledge of electricity retail and generation, as well as emerging energy technologies, complemented by corporate finance expertise, to assess investment, merger, acquisition, and partnerships opportunities.

Knowledge of climate risk, sustainability, and carbon neutrality pathways is important, alongside high integrity, innovative thinking, and a community and customer focused outlook.

While not essential, residency in the Central Lakes region would be an advantage.
