The Background

The Waitaki District covers 7,000 square kilometres of beautiful Otago. From the Waitaki River in the north, to Ohau in the west and Flag Swamp in the south, the district has a diverse range of scenery and attractions. When the Council’s long-serving CEO left, it offered all relevant stakeholders a chance to refocus, build on what was working well and develop some new initiatives.

What We Did to Help

The challenge, as is often the case in working with local government, was to keep the councillors involved in the recruitment process, ensuring that the final decision was a collaborative one. Mayor Gary Kircher was delighted with the approach undertaken by Sheffield. “We found working with Sheffield to be very good and very thorough. We particularly appreciated the flexibility that the Sheffield team brought to the process. Mike was able to add his expertise, whilst adapting to our processes and circumstances.”

What Happened as a Result

Sheffield delivered a very strong shortlist, with candidates sourced from across New Zealand and Australia. “Naturally, we were extremely pleased with the end result”, commented Mayor Gary Kircher. Since the placement of CEO Fergus Power, Sheffield have assisted with the placement of other key staff, including the GM of Tourism Waitaki.
