Coordinator Roading

Westport

  • Work across every roading discipline - small council, full scope
  • Technical, varied and hands-on work
  • Westport based
  • Good base salary; relocation support available

About The Role:

As Coordinator Roading, you will be the technical engine of Buller District Council's roading and transport team; the person who keeps the network running day to day, manages contractor performance, and acts as Engineer's Representative on capital projects and renewals.

This is a role for someone who wants to get things done. You will oversee the annual and monthly works programme for the road maintenance contract, manage budgets, ensure asset data is accurate and current in RAMM and GIS systems, and respond when the West Coast's weather does what it does with slips, flooding, and the remediation work that follows.

You will be the technical go-to for the wider council on roading matters, providing expert advice internally and working closely with key external parties including NZTA Waka Kotahi and WestReef Services, the District's major roading contractor.

This role is substantially community-facing: you will handle service requests, respond to resident and community enquiries, and work directly with people on roading issues that affect them day to day.

When the Team Leader is away, you step up as 2IC, providing opportunities to develop your own leadership skills.

The District's roading programme is substantial. You will work across the full breadth of activity classes - reseals, drainage, structures, footpaths, and road improvements - without being siloed into one discipline. At a small council, you do everything.

Skills & Experience:

If you are technically strong and still developing your leadership style, that is exactly the profile we are looking for. The engineering grounding comes first; everything else can grow.

  • Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering or demonstrated equivalent experience in the roading or civil contracting sector
  • Minimum five years' industry experience in roading construction, maintenance, or civil contracting
  • Knowledge of roading design, construction, maintenance, and repair methodology
  • Ability to develop, manage, and monitor works programmes
  • Experience preparing and monitoring civil construction tenders and contracts
  • Proficiency in RAMM (or AWM) and MS Excel, with the ability to learn new systems
  • Strong customer service focus with the ability to assess complex situations and negotiate practical outcomes
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation
  • Strong health and safety mindset aligned to a Zero Harm culture

A Current STMS qualification, familiarity with NZTA policies and procedures and Transport Investment Online (TIO), experience in local government and working within a Road Controlling Authority (RCA) environment and a qualification in contract or project management are desirable.

Benefits For You:

  • Full-time, permanent role - 40 hours per week
  • A clear career pathway; a proven stepping stone to Team Leader
  • 2IC responsibility when the Team Leader is absent
  • Work across the full breadth of roading disciplines
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Relocation support available
  • Real work-life balance in a stunning part of Aotearoa

About the Company:

Buller District Council is the territorial authority for the northern West Coast, based in Westport. It’s a part of Aotearoa New Zealand where you can finish work and be on the river, in the hills, or at the beach within minutes - the kind of work-life balance that’s hard to find in a larger city.

For the right person, it’s also a place where careers move faster: at a small council managing a diverse infrastructure portfolio, you get breadth of experience in a few years that a specialist role in a large council might never offer. The Council delivers a wide range of infrastructure, regulatory, and community services for residents and ratepayers, with its core values - Community Driven, One Team, Future Focused, Integrity, and We Care - shaping how its people work every day.

BDC's Long Term Plan 2025–2034 commits to $43.1m in local roads capital investment and $42.8m on the Karamea Highway - signalling the scale and importance of roading to this District's future.

Buller District Council honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to working with tangata whenua to deliver on its obligations under Te Tiriti.
