Chief Executive

  • Lead a proudly bicultural, 50% Māori-owned not-for-profit organisation
  • Drive commercial growth across vocational education and training
  • Shape the future of skills and sport for communities across Aotearoa

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Skills Active Aotearoa is a proudly bicultural, not-for-profit organisation, 50% Māori-owned organisation that builds skills and qualifications across te ahumahi ā-rēhia: active recreation, aquatics, exercise, snow sports, sport and related industries. The Group comprises Skills Active Aotearoa Ltd and its wholly owned subsidiary, Skills Active Te Mahi Ako Ltd, a private training establishment delivering work-based learning to thousands of ākonga and the employers and communities they serve.

As we enter our next phase of growth, we are seeking a Chief Executive who can lead with both heart and ambition. Reporting to the Board through the Chair, you will hold overall executive responsibility for both entities, strengthening our bicultural foundations while expanding our commercial capability and strategic impact. This is a rare opportunity to shape an organisation poised to influence the future of vocational education and the lives of ākonga across Aotearoa and beyond.

He kōrero mōu | About you

You will be a values-driven leader of high integrity, equally at home on the marae, in the boardroom, and across education and corporate settings. You will bring the commercial acumen to secure the Group's long-term sustainability and growth, alongside a genuine, practised commitment to Māori success and partnership. You will think systemically, act entrepreneurially and deliver operationally, with the emotional intelligence to inspire and unite a team that lives the values of tika, pono and aroha.

We are also looking for someone who brings:

•    Proven commercial leadership, with the financial literacy and customer-centric thinking to drive sustainable, diversified revenue and growth.

•    Bicultural capability, including confidence engaging with iwi, Māori providers and kaupapa Māori organisations.

•    Familiarity with Aotearoa New Zealand's vocational education landscape, including its funding mechanisms, regulatory settings and ongoing reform context.

•    A record of leading through change, restructuring or growth, and of skilfully navigating the governance and management interface.

•    The ambition to grow the Group's footprint, including identifying and securing opportunities to deliver programmes beyond Aotearoa New Zealand.

If leading a kaupapa-led organisation that makes a tangible difference to the health, wellbeing and futures of communities across Aotearoa appeals to you, we would welcome your interest.
