About Nova Trust:

Nova is a leading New Zealand NGO and Social Enterprise making life better for those affected by alcohol, drugs and other life challenges.

Their skilled and compassionate people work closely with service users, their whānau, families and communities, to change lives.Nova Trust currently manages three treatment and recovery services and two social enterprises. The Trust is based in Canterbury and operates services, from its main site, on the outskirts of Christchurch. The team works with both male and female adult service-users / whai ora, who come from across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Treatment and recovery services are Nova Recovery providing treatment, rehabilitation and supported accommodation for those affected by addiction; Nova STAR to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals placed under the Substance Addiction (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 2017; and Nova res:pite that offers a supportive, safe and secure environment for service-users to engage in or re-establish their recovery from addiction.

Their two social enterprises are Nova Fresh, a well-established horticulture and farming business and Nova Natives, a nursery enterprise producing an array of native plants, trees and grasses works with commercial customers, communities and partners.  Both enterprises work alongside the treatment and recovery programmes, preparing service-users and tangata whai ora for life beyond treatment, through the development of life and employment skills.

About The Role: 

The position reports to the Trust Board, through the Board Chair and is responsible for the effective strategic and operational leadership of the Trust.  The CE is responsible for:

  • Leading a cohesive high performing executive team of three, capable of delivering operational plans and achieving strategic goals, in collaboration with the Board.
  • Managing Nova assets to maximise value to the Trust in the short and long term.
  • Managing the business in accordance with the law and the policies and objectives determined by the Trust Board.
  • Maintaining a commercial lens across all Nova activities to ensure the financial sustainability and growth of the Trust. 
  • Establishing an open and positive culture where management and staff input is encouraged and valued.
  • Working effectively with the Trust Board, providing the right information at the right time; maintaining open channels of communication on a transparent and “no surprises” basis.

The role also has a strategic focus to grow the financial base to support development of services, improve quality, and enhance sustainability.

You will bring:

  • Proven experience in a Chief Executive (CEO) or Senior Executive position, preferably reporting to a Board of Directors.
  • A track record of delivering successful business outcomes through a senior leadership or executive team.
  • Strong commercial acumen, negotiation and financial management skills. 
  • Proven success as a strong and effective communicator and leader who fosters good staff engagement.
  • A track record of success in leading organisational change.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster an open, collaborative work environment that encourages quality, innovation, on-going learning and knowledge sharing. 

You will be:

  • Experienced in developing a high performing team and culture.
  • Skilled in managing stakeholder and contractual relationships and developing networks.
  • Experienced in collaboratively developing and delivering a strategic agenda which delivers successful operational outcomes.
  • Able to balance innovation and creative thinking with critical and objective analysis.

Prior experience with social enterprises and an affinity for the not-for-profit sector is desirable.
