Operations Manager Tramways
Christchurch
- Lead one of Christchurch’s most iconic visitor experiences
- A hands-on operational leadership role
- Lead a diverse team where communication and culture really matter
Lead an Icon
The Christchurch Tramway is one of the city's most loved taonga - a beautifully restored heritage fleet weaving through the heart of Ōtautahi, delivering memorable experiences to thousands of visitors each year. As the foundation arm of Christchurch Attractions, it's also a serious commercial operation with real complexity: a diverse driver workforce, safety-critical compliance requirements, and a growing visitor base that demands consistently excellent service.
We're looking for an experienced Operations Manager to lead our Tramways and Botanic Garden Tour operations.
The Role
Reporting to the Chief Executive, you'll have end-to-end responsibility for the tramway operation - from rostering and shift management to Health and Safety, asset maintenance planning, and team performance. You'll be the person who keeps the trams running smoothly, the team performing at their best, and the customer experience front of mind every day.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and developing a team of 20+ tram drivers and operational staff
- Communicating with empathy and confidence across a diverse team
- Understanding the needs of both customers and staff - and making decisions that serve both
- Driving internal communications and fostering a positive, high-performing culture
- Managing budgets, shift costs, and day-to-day financial performance
- Maintaining the Safety Case and ensuring compliance with the Railway Act 2005
- Developing and overseeing the repair and maintenance plan for trams, tractors and trailers
- Rostering to meet customer demand while controlling costs
- Managing stakeholder relationships, including Christchurch City Council and central city business groups
- Supporting sales, marketing, and business growth initiatives
What You’ll Bring
You don't need a tramway background - but you do need proven leadership credentials and the operational credibility to hit the ground running. Specifically, we're looking for:
- At least 5 years' experience leading a team of 20 or more people
- A strong Health and Safety track record, ideally in a safety-critical or regulated environment
- Confident performance management capability - you address issues early and coach for improvement
- Excellent communication skills and the emotional intelligence to engage a diverse team
- Sharp operational planning and rostering skills
- A commercial mindset and genuine care for the customer experience
- Experience managing stakeholders across public and private sectors
Why This Role
This is a rare opportunity to lead a genuinely iconic operation in the heart of a thriving city. You'll work alongside a passionate team, contribute to a business with strong momentum, and make a visible difference to both the visitor experience and the community that calls Ōtautahi home.
