Home to more than 70,000 people, Waimakariri District Council serves one of Canterbury's fastest-growing districts, spanning Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Oxford, Woodend and the surrounding rural and coastal communities.
Guided by its purpose of making Waimakariri a great place to be, in partnership with its communities, the Council delivers a wide range of services, from core infrastructure such as water, roading and waste, through to community facilities, regulatory services and economic development.

About the Role:
Waimakariri District Council is establishing an independent, external member on its Audit and Risk Committee for the first time. Reporting to Council and working alongside elected members, the Independent Audit and Risk Committee member will bring independent oversight and specialist expertise to the Committee's core responsibilities: financial reporting, audit, risk management, internal controls, and statutory compliance.
The Independent Member will play an active role in Committee discussions, bringing an external, apolitical perspective free from organisational bias, helping Council identify emerging risks and strengthen its overall governance framework.
Skills & Experience:
You will bring 15 to 20 years' senior executive experience in finance, risk management or assurance, with a solid understanding of financial management, risk and internal control frameworks, and significant governance experience, including membership of audit and risk committees within local government or related entities.
An open and transparent communicator, you will combine intellectual curiosity with professional scepticism, testing assumptions and constructively challenging rather than simply endorsing what is presented.
Known for your integrity and sound judgement, you will bring diplomacy and tact to navigate politically sensitive matters, along with a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach and a genuine commitment of time.
A relevant tertiary qualification and CA ANZ membership are required; candidates based in the Canterbury region are preferred.
Fees are an hourly rate of $210 with a cap of $18,000 per annum. The committee meets 6-7 times a year. The term is for 18 months.
